About the Recipe
Let's talk about something that might surprise you: heavy metals. No, not the music genre!
I'm talking about toxic elements like mercury, lead, aluminium, and cadmium that can accumulate in our bodies over time. And here's the thing – they're way more common in our everyday lives than you might think.
So how do these unwelcome guests sneak into our bodies? Well, heavy metals can find their way in through contaminated seafood (especially larger fish like tuna), old plumbing and paint, certain cosmetics and personal care products, dental amalgam fillings, pesticides on our food, air pollution, and even some cookware. Pretty much just living in our modern world means we're exposed to them regularly. Our bodies do their best to eliminate these metals naturally, but sometimes they need a little extra support.
That's where this delicious smoothie comes in! Think of it as your daily detox hug in a glass. Each ingredient has been specifically chosen to work together like a dream team for gently binding to and removing heavy metals from your system.
The wild blueberries are absolutely crucial here – they're packed with powerful antioxidants that help draw heavy metals out of your brain tissue.
Spirulina is a blue green algae that's brilliant at binding to heavy metals in your brain, central nervous system, and liver, preparing them for removal.
The cilantro (or coriander as we call it here in New Zealand!) is fantastic at mobilising heavy metals from hard to reach places, while
Barley grass powder sweeps them up from your spleen, intestinal tract, pancreas, and thyroid.
Atlantic dulse is the hero that binds to the metals once they've been mobilised, ensuring they're actually eliminated from your body rather than being reabsorbed.
And the orange? It provides that lovely vitamin C and glucose your organs need to stay strong during the detox process, plus it makes everything taste absolutely delicious!
The beauty of having all five of these powerhouse ingredients together is that they work synergistically. One ingredient helps mobilise the metals, another binds to them, and others support your organs through the process. It's like a perfectly choreographed dance!
Now, I know what you're thinking – this sounds like it might taste a bit "green" and healthy. But honestly, the banana (or papaya if you prefer), wild blueberries, and orange create such a naturally sweet and fruity flavour that you'll actually look forward to your daily dose.
My top tip? Start with frozen wild blueberries for an extra thick, almost ice cream like texture that feels like a treat rather than a health chore.
Give your body the support it deserves, one delicious sip at a time!
